Understanding Periodontal Disease

At A Perfect Smile Dental Arts, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive periodontal care to help you achieve and maintain optimal oral health. Our periodontics services focus on preventing, diagnosing, and treating periodontal (gum) disease, which affects the gums and the supporting structures of the teeth.

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is an inflammatory condition that targets the gums and the bone supporting your teeth. It typically begins with plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—that, if not properly removed, can harden into tartar, leading to gum irritation and inflammation. Early stages, known as gingivitis, may present with red, swollen, or bleeding gums. Without timely intervention, this can progress to periodontitis, resulting in gum recession, bone loss, and potentially tooth loss.

Common Causes of Periodontal Disease

Several factors can contribute to the development of periodontal disease, including:

  • Poor Oral Hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing can lead to plaque buildup.

  • Tobacco Use: Smoking or chewing tobacco increases the risk of gum disease.

  • Genetic Predisposition: A family history of periodontal issues can heighten susceptibility.

  • Chronic Stress and Poor Diet: These can weaken the immune system, making it harder to combat infections.

  • Medical Conditions: Diseases like diabetes can exacerbate gum problems.

OUR PERIODONTAL SERVICES

Scaling and Root Planing

A deep-cleaning procedure that removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooths the tooth roots to promote healing.

Antibiotic Therapy

Targeted antibiotics may be used to eliminate persistent bacterial infections.

Surgical Interventions

In advanced cases, procedures such as gum grafting or bone grafting may be necessary to restore supportive tissues.

Preventing Periodontal Disease

Maintaining healthy gums is essential for overall oral health. We recommend:

  • Regular Dental Check-ups: Routine visits allow us to detect and address issues early.

  • Good Oral Hygiene Practices: Brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and using antimicrobial mouthwash can help prevent plaque buildup.

  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices: A balanced diet and avoiding tobacco products contribute to gum health.
